From Story to Screen: Jodi Hildebrand Brought Hollywood Insight to Turku Arts Academy
On 22 September 2026, Turku Arts Academy had the privilege of welcoming Jodi Hildebrand, an acclaimed film and television executive producer with more than two decades of experience in the U.S. entertainment industry, for a masterclass and graduate film pitch session organised in cooperation with the American Film Showcase and the U.S. Embassy Helsinki.
Drawing on her extensive experience at organizations such as Condé Nast Entertainment, Olive Bridge Entertainment, and Marvel Studios, Hildebrand offered students and staff
a rare glimpse into how stories evolve into films and television productions. Her masterclass, From Story to Screen, explored the realities of contemporary film development, the role of producers and development executives, and the collaboration required to turn creative ideas into projects that can successfully reach audiences.
One of the most memorable messages of the afternoon was deceptively simple:
“Make it makeable. Make it good. Make sure everyone knows what it is.”
Hildebrand emphasized that a compelling idea alone is not enough. Filmmakers must be able to shape their vision into a project that can realistically be produced and communicate that vision clearly to collaborators, financiers, and audiences. As she noted, “You must be a salesperson” not in the sense of compromising artistic integrity, but in the sense of helping others see the value and potential of a project.
Following the masterclass, three graduating thesis film projects were presented during a Graduate Film Pitch Session. Students received professional feedback on both the creative and practical aspects of their work from a producer’s perspective. The projects included Europa by Ada Vuorinen and Taru Kortelainen, Ilotulet directed by Lovisa Poutiainen, and The Garden of Wolf directed by Amil Hakimdzhan and produced by Max Lönnqvist.
For students preparing to enter the professional film industry, the opportunity to discuss their projects with an experienced Hollywood producer was invaluable. The session highlighted the importance of pitching, constructive feedback, and understanding film development as both a creative and collaborative process.
The visit also demonstrated the value of international partnerships in film education. Through the support of the American Film Showcase and the U.S. Embassy Helsinki, students gained direct access to industry expertise that bridges educational environments and professional practice.
We warmly thank Jodi Hildebrand for sharing her expertise, insights, and encouragement with our students and faculty. Her visit provided not only practical knowledge about film development and production but also inspiration for the next generation of filmmakers as they continue their journey from story to screen.
From story to screen and from film education to professional filmmaking, the future of cinema begins with great stories and the courage to share them.
