Stupid Children - the first feature-length production ever created at the Turku UAS Arts Academy
Stupid Children is directed and produced by
JOONA MIKAEL NIEMINEN
(born in 2000), a Finnish filmmaker and photographer
who has graduated from two different film schools. After
graduating from Sataedu Villilä Film and TV, he completed
his film studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences
(Turku UAS) focusing on directing and cinematography.
His first major short film, Crash Dummy or I’m Not
Working Like I Should and This Time I’m Going to Do
Something About It — which also served as his thesis film at
Sataedu — premiered to critical acclaim at the 2022 Pori
Film Festival. To date, Nieminen has directed over 10 short
films, alongside numerous performing arts films, multicamera
productions, and music videos. In addition to
directing, he has worked as a producer, cinematographer,
gaffer, editor, and colourist across more than 50 audiovisual
productions.
Stupid Children marks Nieminen’s feature-length
directional debut. It also serves as the bachelor’s thesis film
for his graduation from Turku UAS. Notably, the film is the
first — and currently the only — feature-length production
ever created at the institution.
In 2025, Nieminen won the annual Finnish film
production competition PITCH25 with Stupid Children.
Beyond his work in film, he is an active photographer and
has held two exhibitions in Finland: Of Acting (2021) and
Kid, I (2022).
