The Demon of Midday is a 35 minutes long, English language, Czech-Finnish international co-production with especially high production values for a student/indie short film. It features international pro and student cast.
Midday was shot in 2022 in Prague, Czech Republic, in beautiful parks outside the city and in historical 18th Century locations. The post production – editing, sound post and the hundreds of digital magic effects were done during 2023 in Finland. The film is director-writer Fýr Romu’s (Film student 2012-16) graduation work to the acclaimed FAMU International film school in Prague.
Midday’s creative team consists of over a hundred pros, students and enthusiasts from more than 15 different countries. The production had some exceptional features for short film: an intimacy coordinator was used in all the assault scenes, and the production strived for improved ecological sustainability in using recycled materials in set building and non-disposable tableware and vegan options in catering.

The Demon of Midday tells the story of Fern, a young woman possessed by a dark demon who is slowly ripping away her soul piece by piece. Fern looks for help with her friends, finding a frightful witch called Baba Yaga who finally agrees to help. But the cure is not safe nor easy – and first Fern has to demonstrate her worth by fighting the demon alone.
Midday is a fantasy adventure story, but also an allegory about depression and of the difficulty of finding help – and accepting it. Based on the director´s own experience of depression, The Demon of Midday wants to show you should not be ashamed of an illness – struggling is not weakness but a strong sign of courage and resilience when facing an overwhelming opponent alone.
Midday is set in an almost-contemporaly world where magic and supernatural beings exist, symbolizing psychological elements like personality types, aspirations or fears. Midday combines elements of East-European folklore with modern Western fantasy style. The storytelling employs horror, fast-paced adventure and drama, featuring a strong female lead and diverse characters.
